On January 5, the Reeths-Puffer Rockets dominated Grand Rapids Christian in a 7-2 hockey game. Eighteen days later, the Eagles showed how much they continue to grow as a team in a game against those same Rockets. In a close game that saw Christian lose its 1-0 lead in the final period, the Eagles continued to fight. Jack Zwiers’ breakaway goal on an assist to Kormash carried the Eagles to a 2-1 overtime win.

In the first period, the game was scoreless. Grand Rapids Christian got ten shots on net, while the Rockets put together nine. The second period saw the Rockets outshoot the Eagles, but the only shot that lit the lamp came off the stick of Grand Rapids Christian captain Kavanaugh Kane. His goal, with an assist to Matt Ydenberg gave Grand Rapids Christian a 1-0 edge heading into the third period. It was the fifth time this year that Kane found the back of the net, and it was Ydenberg’s first assist of the season.

The third period was very much like the second. Grand Rapids Christian outshot Reeths-Puffer, this time by a 9-7 margin, but the Rockets were the ones to find the back of the net. Their goal evened this contest at one, and sent the game to overtime.

In the extra frame, the Eagles got their game winner on a breakway. As you see in the video sent to me by Coach Shawn Zimmerman, Graham Kormash found Jack Zwiers, who beat the goaltender and found the back of the net. His fist pump celebration, which was followed by a swarm of Eagles mobbing him on the ice, gave the Eagles a tremendous road win on Wednesday night.

The Eagles are now 7-8 on the season after tonight’s victory. They will be back in action with a doubleheader of home action this weekend. On Friday, they host East Grand Rapids in a conference showdown. The next day, Lowell-Caledonia visits Eagles Ice Center for a showdown.
