The Eagles of Grand Rapids Christian had very little trouble in their first game after Christmas break to best East Kentwood and advance to Saturday’s championship game at Lakeside Ice Arena. In the title game, they faced the Rockets of Reeths-Puffer. This one was close after the first period, as the two teams were tied at 1. After that however, the game was dominated by the Rockets as they would eventually take home a 7-2 victory and the tournament title.

Two different players scored in defeat for the Eagles. Graham Kormash scored a goal, his team-leading tenth of the season. The other goal was scored by Matt Ydenberg, his first of the season. Ydenberg’s goal came on the power play for the Eagles.

Assists for the Eagles were awarded to three players. Kavanaugh Kane earned his seventh assist of the year. This places him second on the team in assists, trailing just Ashton Bol (12). Chris Boyd got his third assist and fourth point of the season in this one. The third assist was attributed to Tommy Doyle. He now also has three on the season.

Graham Kormash had a successful day in the faceoff circle as he won 22 of his 29 faceoffs. Alex Singh was also effective in this aspect, winning three of his four faceoffs. The team as a whole however, struggled in the faceoffs winning 61.8%. This is the fifth lowest percentage in twelve games, and the lowest since the Cranbrook game (55.8%).

The Eagles are now 6-6 on the season after Saturday’s game. On Thursday, the Eagles travel to Traverse City Central to start a two game series with the Trojans. The Thursday night game is at 7:30 PM, and the Friday game is at 11:30 am. These games will be held at Centre Ice Arena in Traverse City. They then have twelve days off before resuming play with three games in four days between January 23-26.
