The Grand Rapids Christian Eagles hockey team is firing on all cylinders. A day after an epic comeback victory against Lowell-Cal, they were looking to keep the momentum rolling. They hosted Allen Park Cabrini in a non-league Saturday afternoon affair, and the Eagles dominated from the opening faceoff. Despite being outshot 39-16, the Eagles pitched a shutout in this one. They scored one time in each period en route to a 3-0 win, extending their win streak to four games.
Jack Zwiers was the leading scorer for Grand Rapids Christian, as he netted two goals in the victory. Zwiers now leads the team with six goals scored on the season. The third goal in this one was scored by Ben Buitema, his second goal of the season thus far.
Buitema also had an assist to bring his season point total to three. Ashton Bol recorded his team-high seventh assist in the victory, and he is tied with Zwiers for the most points on the team (ten). Joey Hildebrand received his third assist of the season on a goal in Saturday’s win also, but the leader in assists against Cabrini was Graham Kormash. He assisted on two of Christian’s three goals.
Drew Hoeksema was in goal for the second time this season, and he had another phenomenal outing. He saw a fury of shots by Cabrini, as they peppered the net 39 times. A brick wall in front of the goal, Hoeksema stopped the Monarchs from scoring. He is now 2-0 on the season in goal, and he has stopped 98.1% of the shots he has faced. He currently leads the goaltending unit with a 0.50 GAA.
With the win, the Eagles now find themselves 5-2 on the year. They have a busy week leading up to the holiday break. On Wednesday, they host Forest Hills Central at Eagles Ice Center at 6:00. On Friday, they are at home again, this time at 5:00 against Cranbrook-Kingswood. Finally on Saturday, the Eagles wrap up their week with a noon faceoff against Hartland.
