The Cougars of Grand Rapids Catholic Central met the Escanaba Eskymos for the third straight season in the Division 4 playoffs. This year, these two squared off in the regional finals. Similar to the last two seasons, there was a barrage of points by Catholic Central in a comfortable 35-6 victory.

Freshman quarterback Joey Silveri showed tremendous poise in today’s contest. He started the scoring late in the first quarter when he connected with Jace Williams on a 19-yard touchdown pass to give the Cougars a 7-0 lead. Silveri tossed a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter. He first found Nate Trudeau on a 13-yard pass for a score, and he later rifled it to Malachi Love on a 33 yard passing score. This gave the Cougars a 21-0 halftime edge.

In the third quarter, Silveri picked up where he left off. His fourth touchdown pass of the day saw him hooking up with Williams again, this time from 11 yards to give GRCC a four-score lead. Before the third quarter was over, Nick Hollern broke off an eleven yard touchdown run to increase the Cougars’ lead to 35 points.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Escanaba’s Jared Nash was on the receiving end of a 15 yard touchdown. This was the first touchdown that the Eskymos had scored in any of the three matchups between these two schools in the playoffs. Neither team scored in the final six minutes, leaving the final at 35-6.

The Cougars quest for a third straight title in Division 4 continues next week when they take on Edwardsburg. These two teams met in last year’s State Championship game. The Cougars pulled out a 42-31 victory over the Eddies to earn the State Championship. This year’s rendition of the contest will take place next Saturday at 1:00 at Vicksburg High School.
