The Caledonia Fighting Scots hosted Grand Haven Friday night in their Homecoming game, that was also the final home game of the season. In a back and forth affair, it was senior Caleb Bronkema who left his mark on Ralph E Meyers Memorial Stadium with all four touchdowns in a 28-27 victory for the Scots.
Caleb Bronkema started the scoring late in the firs quarter when he took a three yard carry to the end zone. The missed extra point put the Scots ahead 6-0. Grand Haven took just fifty-nine seconds to respond as Colin Takas tossed a sixty-four yard touchdown. The extra point resulted in a 7-6 advantage for the Buccaneers.
Takas connected on another deep touchdown pass, this one from thirty yards, to extend Grand Haven’s lead to eight points with two minutes left before halftime. The Scots were unable to answer, and they trailed by eight at the break.
In the second half, Caledonia started the scoring as Bronkema broke a forty-five yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion by Bronkema to Kuzava evened the score at fourteen headed into the final quarter of play.
The fourth quarter saw four touchdowns scored, two by each team. Bronkema took to the air to connect with Jack Snider for a ten yard pass and a touchdown, giving Caledonia a 20-14 edge. Takas and the Bucs responded with a fifty-three yard touchdown just seventy seconds later to even the score at 20. After forcing a three and out, Collin Worthington broke off an eighty-three yard run to give the Buccaneers a 27-20 lead.
Caledonia responded with a drive that was capped off by a three yard touchdown run by Caleb Bronkema to pull the Scots within a point. After a timeout of deliberation, Coach Tom Burrill decided to go for the two-point conversion and the win. Bronkema’s number was called yet again, and he rumbled into the end zone to give Caledonia a 28-27 lead with nine seconds left. Jack Snider would intercept Takas to seal the victory for Caledonia.
Bronkema was the star for Caledonia tonight as he was 3/8 for 50 yards and a touchdown passing. He also added 34 carries for 237 yards and 3 touchdowns rushing the football. Drew Kuzava also put together a strong night as he took 15 carries for 61 yards.
With the win, Caledonia improves to 2-5 on the season. They will finish their season on the road against Northview and Grandville. For Grand Haven, they have now lost five straight games to drop to 2-5. They finish the season at West Ottawa and home against Union.
