The Spring Lake Lakers started the 2018 season with a 5-0 record, their best start since 2000. This week, they had a huge test when they took on five-time defending Division 5 State Champion West Catholic. The Falcons got off to a strong start in this one, scoring the first thirty-five points before holding off a late Spring Lake surge in a 38-21 win.

West Catholic started their scoring with a 65 yard pass from Spencer Zobro to Jack Schichtel. After a pair of field goals, these two connected again for a thirty-one yard touchdown to extend the lead to 20 points. The Falcons were not done as Zane Way broke a 49 yard run for a touchdown. Lastly before the half, Zobro found Nick Dorato for a 59-yard touchdown pass to extend the Falcons lead to 35-0.

The running clock was halted as Noah Verlinde was on the receiving end of a twenty-four yard pass from Zach Keyser. Spring Lake scored again to start the fourth quarter when Mitch Payne broke a 27-yard touchdown to bring the Lakers within 21.

West Catholic got their third field goal from Van Vliet, this one from 33 yards, to extend their lead to 24. Spring Lake got a two-yard run by Keyser to cut the lead to its final 38-21 margin. Keyser had a strong game for Spring Lake in the defeat. He was 10 of 15 for 128 yards and a touchdown through the air, and he also tacked on 24 carries for 101 yards and a score on the ground.

In the victory, West Catholic was led by another strong game from Zobro. He was 11 of 20 for 288 yards and three touchdowns. Leading the way on the ground was Zane Way, who took ten carries to get ninety-six yards and a touchdown. Jack Schichtel’s six catches were a team high for West Catholic, and he got 171 yards and two touchdowns.

With the victory, West Catholic improved to 3-3 on the year and 3-0 in the OK Blue. Next week, they have a big contest against Allendale. For Spring Lake, they drop to 5-1 and 3-1 in the OK Blue. Their contest next week is against Grand Rapids Catholic Central.
