The Newaygo Lions had won their last three games, and on Friday night they traveled to Howard City to take on Tri-County. They extended their streak to four with a dominating win, 49-14 to spoil Tri-County’s homecoming.

Zach Rodriguez started the scoring for Newaygo as their first play of the game went 81 yards for a touchdown. On their next drive, Kade Bhuyan ran 83 yards to lead the Lions into the red zone again. This led to Connor Swinehart’s 1 yard in the endzone. Rodriguez would find the endzone again, this time from 10 yards out ending the first quarter 21-0 Newaygo.

Penalties would kill the Vikings all throughout the half. Swinehart extended the lead to 28-0  for Newaygo when he recovered his own fumbled snap and ran it in from a yard out. Tri County would have their own trick play, as Hallman would find Nick Braunschenider in the end zone from 41 yards out, but a failed extra point would leave the score 6-28 Newaygo. A big momentum opportunity occurred for Tri-County with a Swinehart fumble in the endzone, and a Viking recovery. Cam Friend would run 75 yards to the Newaygo 5 yard line, but the Lions defense would be too much for the Vikings, as they forced a fumble and recovered it with less than 30 seconds left in the half.

The Lions would optimize on the Vikings turnovers, as one resulted in a Rodriguez, 14-yard touchdown run. After a couple more touchdowns, the Lions would line up in victory formation to seal a 49-14 win.

The Core Power Player of the Game was Zach Rodriguez, with 18 carries for 194 yards and 4 touchdowns. Connor Swinehart was 7-10 for 195 yards and 1 touchdown. For the Vikings, Nick Braunscheider was 5-15 for 159 yards and 2 touchdowns and Tanner Ching had 9 carries for 50 yards.  The Lions move to 4-2 and will host Grant next Friday, while the Vikings move to 2-4 and will travel to Fremont, Friday.
