The Hudsonville Eagles and Grandville Bulldogs are neighboring schools that have played in every season since 1997, and they have been members of the OK Red Conference together for a majority of that time. Like many contests before, Friday night saw the two teams play another thriller. It needed overtime to decide the winner, but the Eagles eventually would emerge 16-13 winners over Grandville.
In the first quarter, Hudsonville started the scoring with a 30 yard pass from Drew Martinie to Ty Keppel. Ben Dykstra’s extra point would put the Eagles ahead 7-0. The defense on both sides would hold tough in the first half as neither would yield a point until they reached the locker room. Grandville forced three punts and a turnover, and Hudsonville forced three turnovers and two punts.
With just three minutes left in the third quarter, Grandville finally got on the board. A one-yard run by Cam Terry brought the Bulldogs within one. A two-point pass attempt was unsuccessful however, leaving Grandville down one heading into the final quarter.
Hudsonville would score with three minutes left in the game on a one-yard run by Blake Herrema. A missed extra point still left the Eagles up seven. Grandville would respond with thirty seconds left on an eleven yard touchdown run by Landon Poll. This would even the score at thirteen and force overtime.
In the extra frame, Hudsonville would win the game on the leg of kicker Ben Dykstra. His 22-yard field goal would be enough as the Eagles stopped Grandville from scoring to emerge victorious by a score of 16-13.
With the win, Hudsonville now improves to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the OK Red. This week, they have a key conference battle against Rockford. For Grandville, they now fall to 2-4 on the season. They must win out to give themselves any chance to reach the playoffs, and this tough task begins against West Ottawa next Friday night.
