The Allendale Falcons and Grand Rapids Catholic Central Cougars finished last year tied for the OK Blue championship. This year, the two teams met in the sixth week of the season with perfect records in the conference. In a game that started close, the Falcons faltered late in a 52-22 defeat to Catholic Central.
Allendale opened this game with a touchdown as Owen Burk connected with Mason Vredeveld for a touchdown pass in the game’s first four minutes. Catholic Central responded back on the ensuing drive as Jack Collins hit Jace Williams for a touchdown pass. At the end of the quarter, Collins kept the ball for a one yard touchdown run to take a 14-7 lead.
In the second quarter, it was all Catholic Central. Collins started the scoring with a touchdown toss to Nate Trudeau. Four minutes later, Collins used his legs to keep it on a one-yard rush to extend the lead to twenty-one points. The final scoring play before the half was a 28 yard field goal by Brandy Lopez to give the Cougars a 31-7 halftime edge.
Owen Burk’s second touchdown pass of the game brought the Falcons within two scores early in the third quarter, but sixteen was as close as they would get. The Cougars got a pair of interception returns for touchdowns by Jeremy Wolf and Charles Klafeta to extend the lead to thirty points.
In the fourth quarter, the teams exchanged touchdowns. Catholic Central opened with a two-yard touchdown run by Shawn Wells. Allendale responded on the ensuing kickoff return with a 82-yard touchdown by Sabastian Wells. The game would end with its final thirty point margin, a 52-22 Cougar victory.
With the win, Catholic Central advances to 5-1 on the year and 3-0 in the OK Blue. Next week, they take on Spring Lake. Allendale slides to 3-3 and 2-1 in league play, and they will resume action next week against West Catholic in another key OK Blue battle.
