It was homecoming on Friday night for the Fremont Packers. Typically a weekend filled with celebration between football and dancing, the Fremont rendition got off to a rough start on Friday night. The Newaygo Lions walked into town and handily defeated the Packers 55-7.
Friday night was the Connor Swinehart show as he finished the game with five touchdowns. He first found Kade Bhuyan for a 19 yard touchdown strike to put Newaygo up by six. Later in the first, Swinehart would find Jarrod Wismar from 13 yards out to extend the lead to thirteen.
Swinehart would continue to find his groove with three more touchdowns in the second quarter. He first found Bhyan for a 13 yard touchdown to extend the lead to 20. Swinehart would connect with Wismar twice, a 47 yard touchdown and 64 yard touchdown, to put the Lions up 34-0 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Zach Rodriguez would have the sole scoring play with a 73 yard run to extend Newaygo’s lead to 41 points.
The final quarter saw Newaygo outscore the Packers 14-7 to extend their victory margin even more. Brenden Brechting would start the 4th with a 12 yard touchdown run for Newaygo. Fremont finally got on the board with a 15 yard run by Zayne Stroven. The final score of the night came from Conner Reyburn, as he would add to the Lions’ lead with his 87 yard run.
Newaygo is now 3-2 on the season, and they are 3-1 in the CSAA-Gold. Next week, they will take on Tri-County in a pivotal battle for playoff positioning for both teams.
