The East Grand Rapids Pioneers have suffered a pair of losses on the season thus far, though they were against two of the area’s best teams in Muskegon and Zeeland East. This week, they took on Wayland in their second game in OK Gold play. The Pioneers have now won all fourteen conference games since joining the OK Gold in 2016, seven of which have been shutouts, in their 26-0 win over Wayland.

Star tailback John Shelton was bottled up by the Wayland defense tonight, as he was held to just 58 yards on 19 carries. The senior quarterback Jalen Broussard filled the gap for East Grand Rapids however, as he scored three of the touchdowns for the Pioneers in this victory.

After a scoreless first quarter, Jalen Broussard scored on the first play of the second frame with a five-yard run. The unsuccessful extra point put East up by six. Shelton scored his one touchdown of the game with an eight-yard run midway through the second quarter. The failed two-point try put East up 12-0 heading into the locker room.

The second half was all East once again, as the Pioneers scored both of the touchdowns. In the third quarter, Broussard used his arm to toss a sixteen yard pass to Owen DeJonge for a touchdown to put East up 19. The fourth quarter’s lone touchdown was a 20 yard run by Broussard to extend the lead to 26.

Broussard had another stellar night as he has 18 carries for 188 yards and two touchdowns. He also completed 10 of his 16 passes for 98 yards and a touchdown. This was the thirteenth league win by double digits for East Grand Rapids in fourteen games in the OK Gold. Twelve of the thirteen have been by at least 21 points.

Next week, East Grand Rapids will continue their league slate as they host South Christian. For Wayland, they slide to 3-2 on the year as they suffered their second straight loss. Next week, they travel to Forest Hills Eastern in a league contest.
