The first two games of the season were hard for Newaygo, falling to a pair of tough opponents. Since then, Newaygo has played much better football. They played tough on Friday, and they mounted a comeback to even their record with a 21-14 victory over Big Rapids.

Newaygo would score first in this one as Connor Swinehart rushed it in from a yard out. This lead wouldn’t last for long however as Jace Gray and the Cardinals got a touchdown of their own, a five yard run. Just before halftime, Big Rapids’ Dorian Martin ran it in from three yards out to give them a 14-7 edge heading into the locker room.

Both defenses held tough in the third quarter and gave up zero points. In the fourth quarter, Swinehart broke off a 73 yard run to even the score at fourteen. After a defensive stop, Swinehart and the offense marched down the field. He found Brenden Brechting on the other end of a 25 yard pass to give Newaygo the seven point lead.

Big Rapids had an opportunity to answer, but Newaygo intercepted the pass and sealed the victory. The Core Power Player of the Game in this one was Michael LaFontsee. An interior lineman, LaFontsee controlled the trenches and set the tone for Newaygo on both sides of the football.

The Lions will travel over to Fremont next Friday to face the Packers in their next game in CSAA-Gold play. Eric Wells and Kyle Wells will be on the call for the 7:00 kickoff. You can listen to the game LIVE at the Michigan Sports Radio website or on the app.
