The Freeland Falcons started their season with a pair of non-conference victories. After a tough loss to league foe Swan Valley last week, they attempted to get back in the win column as they took on the Bluejays of Shepherd. They wasted little time in this contest, taking an early lead in a 36-0 win.

In the first quarter, Freeland got a major contribution for Carston Yaw. He scored a pair of touchdowns in the first twelve minutes on a 76-yard touchdown run and a 25-yard touchdown catch. This ball was thrown by sophomore quarterback Ben Wellnitz, who was making his first career start.

The defense contributed to the scoring column in the first quarter as well when Joe Melzo scooped up a fumble and took it in for a touchdown. This all propelled the Falcons to a 22-0 first quarter lead. Four total turnovers were forced by Freeland as Jaden Debeau recorded the other three interceptions.

Freeland scored a pair of touchdowns in the second half rushing the football. In the third quarter, Layne Morgelli rushed for a four-yard touchdown to cap off a seventy-five yard drive. The fourth quarter saw Freeland score on a Will Vondette ten-yard run.

With the win, Freeland improves to 3-1 on the year and 1-1 in the TVC-Central. Next week, they are at home against Standish-Sterling. This is the annual “Clash for the Cure” football contest.
