The East Grand Rapids Pioneers had very high expectations heading into this season. These had been tampered down some in the media as a result of losses to Zeeland East and Muskegon, but their goals remained the same. They began OK Gold play this week against Forest Hills Eastern. Four touchdowns in the first quarter kickstarted a strong performance for the Pioneers who get back to .500 on the season with a 40-29 win over the Hawks.

In less than two minutes into the game, East Grand Rapids struck first. Jalen Broussard connected with Robbie Stuursma for a 61-yard pass to bring the Pioneers into the red zone. This led to a one-yard touchdown run by Broussard to give East the early lead.

Just eighty-four seconds later, East would score again as John Shelton ran it in from two yards out. The Pioneers third score of the quarter came as a result of a Broussard keeper at the 6:21 mark. Finally, East got to 26 points in the first quarter alone when Shelton rushed for a four yard score.

Forest Hills Eastern did not lay down in this one as sophomore quarterback John Morgan filled in and delivered a pair of touchdown passes to bring the Hawks within 12 just minutes into the second quarter. This would not last however as Broussard would rush for two more touchdowns to extend the Pioneer lead to 26 at the break.

Broussard had a tremendous day today for the Pioneers as he recorded 144 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns on fourteen carries. He also added 152 yards through the air, including 109 of them to Stuursma on just two passes. John Shelton also turned in a nice night with 15 carries for 141 yards and a pair of scores.

East now improves to 2-2 on the year and 1-0 in the OK Gold. Next week, they will hit the road to take on the Wildcats of Wayland. Forest Hills Eastern falls to 1-3 and 0-2 in the Gold. They will be back in action next Friday when they travel to Grand Rapids Christian.
