After two tough defeats to begin the year, the Newaygo Lions and Central Montcalm Hornets squared off in CSAA-Gold action with hopes to end their losing streaks. The Lions played extremely well in this one, emerging as 62-14 winners.

Central Montcalm started the game with a 1 yard run from Andrew Johnson and a successful two point conversion to take an 8-0 lead. Newaygo would respond with touchdowns on back to back possession. First, Connor Swinehart passed it to Brendan Brechting for a 35 yard score, and then on the following drive, Zach Rodriguez would run 40 yards to the end zone, putting Newaygo up 14-8 to end the first quarter.  

The Lions owned the 2nd quarter as they shut out the Hornets. Swinehart scored four times in the second quarter. First, he found Jarrod Wismar for a 15 yard touchdown. He would run for two scores from ten and seventy-two yards out respectively before finding Wismar again for an 18 yard touchdown. The Lions led at half 42-8. 

Newaygo’s Zachary Rodriguez would start the second half scoring with a touchdown from 27 yards out. Central Montcalm would retaliate with Teague Stander and his speed, resulting in a 70 yard touchdown to make the score 49-14 Newaygo. Brendan Bretchting stepped up to the plate as the Lion’s quarterback for the second half, finding David Gaonzalez-Tirado for a 15 yard touchdown, 55-14.  

The 4th quarter was uneventful for the Hornets, as Bretchting would run a 69 yard touchdown for Newaygo, sealing the deal for the Lions, 62-14.  

Connor Swinehart was the Core Power Player of the Game, passing 3 touchdowns for 111 yards and ran the ball ten times for 156 yards and 2 touchdowns.
