The Pioneers of East Grand Rapids lost their regular season opener a week ago against Zeeland East. This week, they faced another tough opponent in Forest Hills Northern, who entered 1-0. The Huskies put up a formidable fight, taking the lead three separate times in this one. East however was resilient, answering back every time before finally John Shelton scored to put the Pioneers ahead and seal the first win of the year 27-21.

Brandon Matthews started the scoring for Northern as he ran it in from five yards out early in the first quarter. East would respond as Jalen Broussard found Jack Billo for an eleven-yard touchdown just before the end of the quarter to even the score.

In the second quarter, FHN took the lead again as Xavier Webster found Ian Rampersand for an eighteen yard touchdown strike to put them up seven headed into the locker room. East once more would respond beginning the half as Broussard scored on a 45-yard touchdown run.

With the game knotted up at fourteen, you guessed it, Forest Hills Northern again took the lead. This time it was Brandon Matthews again, as his five-yard run gave them a 21-14 advantage. John Shelton would tie the game early in the fourth as he carried the ball 20 yards for the score.

With forty seconds to play, Shelton broke the tie as he plunged across the goal line from thirteen yards out to give the Pioneers a 27-21 edge. Northern was unable to draw up a quick touchdown, allowing East to leave with a victory.

East Grand Rapids improves to 1-1 on the year, and next week they face Muskegon. Dave VanNoord will be LIVE on this call from Memorial Field next Friday night!
