The first week of the high school football season has come and gone. The first week’s coverage concludes with the selection of the Core Power Performance Impact Players of the Week.
Caleb Bronkema (Caledonia): In the season opener against Holt, Bronkema was dynamic. He rushed 34 times for 203 yards and three touchdowns. He also threw for a fourth as he went 7/16 for 125 yards as the Scots opened 2018 in the win column.
Gabe Taylor (Zeeland East): On Saturday night, the Chix knocked off East Grand Rapids thanks to stellar quarterback play by Taylor. He was 8/12 for 165 yards, and he added 112 yards on the ground. He also accounted for all five touchdowns, three in the air and two on the ground.
Hudsonville Defense: In Coach Brent Sandee’s first game, the defense carried the load for the Eagles. They forced four turnovers in their win over Grand Ledge, and they all ultimately led to touchdowns.
Kennedy Smith (Northview): In a shootout win over Comstock Park, Smith was impossible to stop. He was 11/11 throwing the football for 223 yards and four touchdowns. He also had 12 carries for 69 yards.
Sincere Dent (Mona Shores): In a win over Kentwood, the senior tailback had a career night. He rushed 30 times for 223 yards and five touchdowns. He also hauled in a fifty-five yard reception.
Wilson Wirebaugh (Holland Christian): The senior gunslinger for the Maroons had a strong opening night in a win over Coopersville. He was 17/25 for 291 yards and four touchdowns through the air, in addition to rushing eleven times for ninety-two yards and a score.
