Last night, the Freeland Falcons began their 2018 season by going on the road to face Marshall, a team out of the Interstate-8 Conference. After falling behind in the middle portion of the game, the Falcons showed some resiliency and clawed their back to force overtime. In the overtime period, Freeland would outscore Marshall to emerge victorious by a final of 27-24.

This game started off strong for Freeland as Elijah Vlassis drove the Falcons the length of the field before ultimately finding Jack Townsend in the end zone for a seven yard score to give Freeland a 7-0 lead after one.

Costly mistakes haunted the Falcons in the middle portion of the contest. An interception led to a quick score for Marshall, as Ezra McAllister punched it in from two yards out. Following a fumble by Freeland, Aidan Belew capitalized on the mistake by finding Jack Krull for a sixteen yard touchdown to allow Marshall to take a 13-7 lead entering the locker room.

The second half started with a blocked punt by Freeland. Marshall capitalized on this turnover with a 14-yard touchdown run by Ezra McAllister, and the Redhawks led 21-7.

In the fourth quarter, Freeland mounted an impressive comeback. The defense held strong, and Layne Moergelli started the scoring with a two-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion. The defense again forced a punt, and Moergelli again found the end zone, this time from twelve yards out. A final drive by Marshall was unsuccessful and the teams went to overtime.

Marshall started the overtime frame by advancing two yards before kicking a 25-yard field goal to take a 24-21 lead. Freeland had the opportunity to extend or win the contest, and after a brief delay for an injury, they struck. Aidan West had two carries, including a game-winning two-yard plunge.

The Falcons improve to 1-0 on the season. Next week, they will host Carrollton in their home opener. This game will take place at 7:00 LIVE on Michigan Sports Radio.
