The 2018 season began on Thursday night as Holland Christian hit the road to take on the Broncos of Coopersville. Holland Christian’s quarterback Wilson Wirebaugh brought his gun-slinging abilities with him, accounting for five touchdowns (four through the air), as he carried the Maroons to a 33-24 victory.
Senior Max Glass started the scoring by being on the receiving end of a Joe Keefe pass for a seven-yard touchdown strike just eighty-seven seconds into the contest. Coopersville missed the extra point but they held a 6-0 early lead.
This lead would hold for just a minute, as Wirebaugh hit the air for a forty yard touchdown strike. The extra point was also unsuccessful, leaving the game knotted at six headed into the locker room.
Holland Christian opened the scoring in the second half with another connection between Wirebaugh and Van Wieren, this time from ten yards out. Just four minutes later, Wirebaugh went to the air again for a thirty-four yard touchdown to give the Maroons a 20-6 lead.
Coopersville would respond in a big way as Cayden Schneider hauled in a 65-yard touchdown to cut the lead to eight halfway through the third quarter. The Broncos and Maroons would exchange a pair of touchdowns after this to keep the lead at eight just minutes into the fourth quarter, but it was as close as Coopersville would get.
The Maroons would emerge victorious in this one by the final of 33-24, snapping their seven-year losing streak in season openers. Next week, the Maroons will try and improve to 2-0 when they take on Forest Hills Eastern. For Coopersville, they will attempt to get their first win as they take on Hamilton.
