The Girls State Champions will be crowned this year at the Van Noord Arena on the Campus of Calvin College. The State Semifinals and Finals that are normally played at the Breslin Center have been relocated due to scheduling issues in East Lansing. Opening round of girls district basketball playoffs began on Monday night. Michigan Sports Radio covered 3 of the games.
The East Grand Rapids Pioneers prevailed over the Greenville Yellow Jackets by a final score of 46-27. The loss gives the Jackets a final record of 9-12. The young Jacket team ends their season tonight, but they look forward to the off season workouts which should lead to an exciting season in 2018-2019. The win moves the Pioneers to an exciting matchup Wednesday night agianst the Forest Hills Central Rangers. The Pioneers will host the game which is scheduled to tip off at 7:30. The Pioneers will bring their record of 18-3 agianst the Rangers 14-6 overall record. This one is too close to call with the winner moving to the Class A District 8 Championship game agianst the winner of the Rockford vs Forest Hills Northern game scheduled to tip also Wednesday from East GR at 6:00. The East Kentwood Falcons Remain undefeated as they enjoyed a 31 point victory in round one of Class A District 6 action. The final score was EK 65 OH 34. They say that on any given night, any given team….. However, the task was a little too much for the Bengals of Ottawa Hills. The loss for the Bengals leaves them with a season record of 5-12. The Falcons, with the win move to 21-0 and will host the District 6 Semifinals on Wednesday night agianst Caledonia (16-5) tipoff scheduled for 7:30. The winner will play in the District Final on Friday agianst the winner of the early game on Wednesday. The Tri-County Vikings will move on the the Class B District 60 Semi Finals on Wednesday night. 58-40 was the final tally as the Lions from Newaygo will finish their season 5-16. The win gives the Vikings a 13-8 oveall record and sets up a 3rd meeting between the Grant Tigers (6-14) and the Vikings this season. The Vikings have won the two prior matchups. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 with the early game tip set for 6pm between the Sparta Spartans (9-11) and the host school Fremont Packers (11-10).
