Fresh off of their upset win over East Grand Rapids, the Red Hawks of Cedar Springs hit the road to DeWitt to take on the Panthers in a district championship matchup. After Cedar Springs started with the lead, DeWitt’s superior talent emerged as they advanced to next weekend’s regional game with a 36-12 victory.
Cedar Springs scored the game’s first touchdown as John Todd ran 32 yards to the end zone. The extra point was unsuccessful and the Red Hawks lead remained at six. Five minutes later, DeWitt responded as Blake Gatfield tossed a touchdown to Noah Koenigsknecht to give the Panthers a 7-6 edge.
Early on in the second quarter, Gatfield and Koenigsknecht connected again, this time on a 46-yard strike for six. The extra point was also good, and their lead was expanded to eight points. Right before the half, DeWitt would extend their lead to fifteen points as Gatfield found Alan Smith for a 21-yard touchdown.
In the third quarter, DeWitt expanded their lead as Darron Weber Jr rushed for a six yard touchdown. At 29-6, this game was rather in hand for the Panthers. There was an exchange of touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but it did little to effect the margin of victory.
Offensively for DeWitt, the passing attack was led by Blake Gatfield. He went 11/14 for 183 yards and three touchdowns. Rushing the ball, they were led by Darron Weber Jr, who took 13 carries for 118 yards and a touchdown, as the team rushed for 200 yards. On the receiving end for the Panthers, Noah Koenigsknecht led the way with eight catches for 158 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
With the victory, DeWitt advances to next week’s regional final contest, where they will face the Big Reds of Muskegon. The game time and date will be determined at a later date.
