The East Grand Rapids Pioneers are one of the most storied programs in the state of Michigan, with a plethora of state championships. On Friday night, they took on the Sailors of South Christian with the opportunity to win their second straight outright OK Gold championship, as well as their first undefeated regular season since 2010. In a strong display of defense, the Pioneers accomplished both, a 13-7 win.

In the first quarter, the Sailors drove 65 yards to the Pioneers’ 20-yard line before they fumbled the ball away. Max Lundeen recovered the fumble for East Grand Rapids, stopping the drive. This was South’s best scoring opportunity in the first half.

With two and a half minutes left in the first half, Mike Malewitz tossed a ten-yard pass to Jack Billo to get the Pioneers on the board. The unsuccessful extra point left East Grand Rapids ahead 7-0 heading to the locker room.

The East Grand Rapids defense held strong again in the third quarter, and Malewitz’ touchdown run from 24-yards late in the quarter expanded the lead to thirteen points.

In the fourth quarter, Andrew Haan got the Sailors on the board with a ten yard toss to Luke Schrotenboer. The extra-point left the Sailors behind six points with 3:47 to play. They were unable to get on the board the rest of the contest, and the Pioneers walked away winners in this contest.

With the win, East Grand Rapids improved to 9-0 on the season and earned their second straight OK Gold title. They will host a home playoff game next week, with the opponent to be determined on Sunday. For South Christian, they fall to 7-2 on the year, and they will also be playing in the playoffs, though it is unsure who or where that game will take place.
