The Cougars of Catholic Central had an incredible year in 2016, winning the Division 4 State championship with a 13-1 record. This year, Coach Todd Kolster’s bunch has set the bar even higher, as they have now won the outright OK Blue title, and an undefeated regular season after a win over Coopersville on Friday night with a 52-23 victory.

In the first quarter, Coopersville started the scoring with a touchdown toss to Cayden Schneider. They would expand the lead in the first quarter with a touchdown run by Nolan Fugate. This left the teams tied after the first quarter of play.

The Broncos took the lead on an early second quarter field goal, but their lead did not last long as Catholic Central scored seventeen straight points to end the quarter. Fugate scored his second touchdown, a 54-yard run, to put them ahead 14-10. Jack Bowen then scored on a quarterback keeper to extend the lead to 21-10. A field goal at the end of the quarter put Catholic Central ahead 24-10 heading to the locker room.

To open the third quarter, Fugate found the end zone yet again, this time from 22 yards out. Coopersville would score again as Schneider’s fifteen yard pass brought the game within two touchdowns again. Bowen would expand the lead by tossing his third touchdown of the game halfway through the third quarter. At the end of the quarter, Tony Nikodemski hauled in a touchdown to cut the lead to 38-23.

In the final quarter, the Cougars scored two touchdowns, a six-yard score by Fugate, his fourth of the night, and a five yard touchdown run by Shawn Wells, his first career score. This expanded the lead to its final margin of 52-23.

With the win, Catholic Central improved to 9-0 on the season, clinched the outright OK Blue title, and next week they will begin their quest for a second straight state title. They should host another home game, with the opponent to be announced on Sunday. For Coopersville, they also will be in the playoffs, with location and opponent to be determined on Sunday as well.
