Dwain Koscielniak, Francis Tallent, and Devon Spalding. In the history of MHSAA Football, just those three players have ever finished a contest with more rushing yards than Catholic Central’s Nolan Fugate on Friday night. The senior tailback rushed for 472 yards and five touchdowns in his final regular season home game for the Cougars as they won in a 57-50 shootout over Comstock Park.

This game featured fifteen total touchdowns, and the first one of the game was the first of the night for Fugate, a seventeen yard run. The Cougars would score the next two touchdowns, a pair of scores by Erik Grabow, and they had a 21-0 lead early. It appeared that this night was going to be no different than the first six contests of the season that they dominated.

The Panthers showed a relentless fight in this contest, and this showed for the remainder of the first half as they outscored Catholic Central 29-8 to draw the game to a tie at the half. Their last score of the half came as the clock was expired, and Comstock Park came down with a jump ball in the end zone for a score.

In the third quarter, the scoring mellowed out relatively, as Catholic Central would score the only two touchdowns of the half. Nolan Fugate found the end zone for the second and third times of the night, including a 73-yard dash for a score just seventy-one seconds into the second half.

In the fourth quarter, the Cougars and Panthers shifted back and forth between the seven and fourteen point margin, but Comstock Park was unable to close the gap beyond that. Their final touchdown came with 1:37 to play on JoJo Whitley’s third rushing touchdown of the day, but they were unable to get the ball back and score the tying touchdown. The Cougars held on for a 57-50 win to improve to 7-0. Next week, the OK Blue Conference title is on the line as Catholic Central will visit Fifth Third Ballpark to take on West Catholic, who enters the contest at 6-1. For Comstock Park, they sit at 4-3 on the season, and the matchup against Sparta next week is pivotal to their pursuit of reaching the playoffs.
