Growing up an avid sports fan, my father always preached to me that “basketball is a game of runs”. Well on Friday night in Comstock Park, the emphasis on runs applied to the football game. West Catholic started off the game with 27 of the game’s first 33 points, taking a commanding 27-6 lead just ninety-four seconds before halftime. The Panthers then responded with a pair of touchdowns to cut the game to a single possession, 27-20. The final run in this contest was a trio of touchdowns by the Falcons, carrying them to a 48-20 victory over Comstock Park.

West Catholic, per their norm, won this game thanks to a stellar ground game. The Falcons rushed the ball 55 times in this contest for 413 yards and six touchdowns. They were led by Alex Fortier, who had 21 carries for 169 yards and a touchdown. Not far behind was Zack Lee, who took eleven carries and turned them into 136 yards and four touchdowns. The third rusher to top 100 yards on the ground was quarterback Gaetano Vallone, who had twenty carries for 109 yards and a score.

The second trend that continued for the Falcons is their ability to limit the running game of their opponents. JoJo Whitley, one of the area’s top running backs, was held to just 38 yards on twelve carries. The West Catholic defense also forced a pair of turnovers.

With the win, West Catholic improves to 5-1, and they will look to clinch a spot in the playoffs when they travel to Sparta next Friday night. For Comstock Park, they fall to 4-2 on the season, and the playoffs are still within reach. They have a much tougher task next week when they travel to Catholic Central on Friday night.
