The MLive Game of the Week pitted two OK Gold foes that entered this contest unbeaten and ranked in the Remax-United Power Poll. The #3 ranked Pioneers took the crosstown trip to take on the #8 Eagles, and the two teams showed again why they are amongst the best in the area. Ultimately, the stellar play of East’s Connor Davis was too much, and they would use his three touchdowns to win 28-7.
On the opening kickoff, Connor Davis broke a couple tackles before turning on the jets, as he cruised to a 92-yard kickoff return touchdown. The Pioneers lead was short lived however, as Isaac Dykema connected with James Patrick on a 40 yard touchdown pass on the ensuing drive to even the score at seven.
Early in the second quarter, East’s quarterback Mike Malewitz used his legs to break through the defense for a 30 yard touchdown scamper, putting the Pioneers back in front 14-7. They would take this lead to the locker room.
There were only two touchdowns in the second half, and they both came from Connor Davis. In the third quarter, he took a handoff for a ten yard score, expanding the lead to fourteen points. He would later put the game on ice with a three yard run with 1:11 to play, giving East its 28-7 lead.
With the victory, East Grand Rapids improves to 6-0 on the season, qualifying for the playoffs and taking control of the OK Gold standings. Next week, they will travel to Wayland to take on the Wildcats. For Grand Rapids Christian, they drop to 5-1 on the year, and they will be taking to the road to face Forest Hills Eastern next Friday night.
