The Catholic Central Cougars have been one of the elite defenses early on in the 2017 season, as they entered this contest giving up just 6.6 points per game. Tonight, their defense played below that average, as they just allowed six points in a 35-6 win over the Spartans of Sparta High School.
This game was never close, as the Cougars scored the first thirty-five points of the game, all rushing touchdowns. Quarterback Jack Bowen opened the scoring with a three yard touchdown on the ground. Nolan Fugate, the senior running back for the Cougars, led the way tonight offensively as he scored the next three rushing touchdowns for Catholic Central. The fifth touchdown came on the legs of Erik Grabow, a nine-yard rush.
For Sparta, they struggled to move the ball most of the night, and their lone scoring drive came with 3:35 left in the contest. Quarterback Grant Kelley scampered for a one yard touchdown rush, but the margin was far too much to overcome.
With the win, Catholic Central improves to 6-0 on the season, earning them a spot in the postseason. At 3-0, they also remain in control of their own destiny in the OK Blue. Next week, they will host Comstock Park in another tune-up for the huge Week 8 matchup against West Catholic. For Sparta, they fall to 4-2, 2-2 in the OK Blue. They will host West Catholic next week, and a win would be huge in propelling them to a postseason berth.
