Just four weeks into the season, it appears that the OK Gold has three teams that could possibly contend for the league title in East Grand Rapids, Grand Rapids Christian and South Christian. On Friday night, the Eagles made a huge statement that they are a strong contender, and the Sailors suffered what could be a crucial injury in a 33-12 GRC win.

The Eagles jumped out of the box with a touchdown as Tre Vallar ran it in from three yards out. The extra point was unsuccessful and they held a 6-0 lead. On the last play of the first quarter, kicker Dayne Weldy converted a 33-yard field goal to extend the Eagles lead to nine.

In the second quarter, the Sailors responded as do-it-all quarterback Andrew Haan kept it for a three-yard score. His extra point attempt was blocked however, and so the Sailors trailed by three. The Eagles would score again before the half, but that was the least of South Christian’s worries as they entered the locker room.

Andrew Haan never returned to the game in the second half, as he left with a knee injury, but his replacement Luke Schrotenboer played a very strong second half. He brought the Sailors within four points (16-12) with the first touchdown of the second half, an eight-yard quarterback keeper.

That was all that South Christian would score however, as the momentum turned to the Eagles on a 59-yard pass from Isaac Dykema to James Patrick. Weldy converted another field goal in the third quarter, and the clincher for the Eagles was a 85-yard interception return by Sage Serbenta halfway through the fourth quarter.

With the victory, the Eagles now sit at 4-0 on the season and they will step out of league play for a battle against Cedar Springs on Friday. The Sailors, 3-1 after this first loss, will try to bounce back on the road against Wayland.
