The Sparta Spartans and Coopersville Broncos both have started off 2017 strong, and the Spartans especially surprised many people with their 3-0 start. This week, the Broncos showed that they too are a surprise force to be reckoned with in the OK Blue, as they knocked off Sparta 28-21.
The Broncos started this one off strong, as they scored all fourteen points in the first half. Riley Johnson started it off with a short run, and then Cayden Schneider had a six yard passing touchdown.
They continued their strong play in the second half and took a 28-7 lead late into the third quarter, before Sparta quarterback Grant Kelley ran the ball in to cut the lead to fourteen. Kelley scored the only fourth quarter touchdown in this game, another five yard run, but it was not enough. The Spartans fell seven points short, suffering their first loss of 2017.
Next week, the Spartans will look to bounce back when they host Allendale. For Coopersville, they hope to keep their strong start as Coach Kaman’s bunch hits the road to take on West Catholic, who shutout Spring Lake on Friday night.
