In their season openers, Warren DeLaSalle and Grandville had polar opposite weeks. The Pilots were dominated by Lowell 36-6, while Grandville easily handled Holt 53-13. After seeing both of those results, not many people expected Grandville, ranked #3 in the Remax-United Power Poll, to lose Thursday’s contest–let alone be shutout 31-0.

Warren DeLaSalle wasted no time in scoring as Riley Garrison started the game with a 20-yard field goal to put the Pilots ahead 3-0. Later in the quarter, quarterback Luke Pfromm ran the ball in from a yard out to give WDLS a 10-0 lead.

The middle two quarters of this contest were much more even, as the Pilots only outscored Grandville 7-0. The lone score was halfway through the second quarter as Semaj Shelton took a carry 76-yards to the end zone. He would finish the game with six carries for 91 yards and the touchdown.

Just two minutes into the fourth quarter, Pfromm found Cordell Tannyhill for a 21-yard touchdown pass to expand the lead to 24-0. Pfromm had an efficient night, finishing 4/5 for 60 yards and a touchdown through the air, while adding eight yards and a touchdown on two touches on the ground.

The final touchdown for Warren DeLaSalle was scored by Carlos Smith, who broke off a 60-yard touchdown run. He finished the contest with eleven carries for eighty-five yards and the touchdown.

For Grandville, they struggled to pass the football. Quarterback Tommy Blitchok was 1/4 for two yards and an interception in this contest, raising some questions about their ability to move the ball in the air if they find themselves in passing situations. On the ground, they were led by Nate Nielson who finished with eleven carries for eighty-two yards, seventy-three of which came in the second half.

With the loss, Grandville drops to 1-1 on the season. They will begin the pursuit of an OK Red Championship next week when they travel to Grand Haven on Friday. The Buccaneers enter the contest 0-2 after losing to Reeths-Puffer and Traverse City West in the season’s first two weeks.
