For the second straight season, the West Catholic Falcons opened their season against a fellow state power in Jackson Lumen Christi. This year they both entered the season as reigning champions, as West Catholic won their fourth straight title in Division 5, and the Titans of Lumen Christi won the Division 6 title a season ago.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Falcons would start the scoring in this contest as quarterback Gaetano Vallone found Jack Schichtel for a 51-yard score. Under a minute later, Lumen Christi would even the score as Sebastian Toland ran 92 yards to the end zone.

Liam Putz, the area’s top kicker a season ago, added another field goal to his total in the second quarter as he connected from 36 yards out. The Titans would respond before the half, as Troy Kutcha found Cam White for a 46 yard touchdown to give Lumen the 14-10 halftime lead.

Sebastian Toland opened the scoring in the second half, as he would score from eighteen yards out halfway through the third quarter. Gateano Vallone brought the Falcons back within four on the next possession as he found Nick Dorato for a touchdown.

Both teams would exchange touchdowns early in the fourth quarter, including a fumble return for a score by Lumen Christi’s Nic Thomas, and that would be all on the scoring front. The final drive of the game by West Catholic was about as close as you can get however, as they marched all the way to the three-yard line with four seconds to play. Coach Joe Hyland rolled the dice, a decision he has since said he would do again in that situation, and instead of kicking the tying field goal, he went for the win. Vallone kept the ball on a quarterback keeper, and he was tackled one yard short of the end zone, sealing the win for Lumen Christi.

With the 27-24 defeat, West Catholic falls to 0-1 on the young season. Next week, they will be back in action on Thursday as they host the Tigers of Muskegon Heights. In their season opener, Muskegon Heights was defeated by Harbor Springs 29-22. Thursday’s game will be broadcast LIVE on Michigan Sports Radio.
