The South Christian Sailors and Holland Christian Maroons were two of the programs that began their 2017 seasons on Friday night, and they faced off at East Kentwood High School. This game was never close from the beginning as the Sailors steamrolled the Maroons en route to a 40-12 win.
Holland Christian tried to steal some momentum to start the contest with an onside kick, but their inability to recover put South Christian in good field position. Just a few plays into the drive, senior quarterback Andrew Haan delivered a beautiful 49-yard strike to Josh Oetman for the game’s first touchdown, putting the Sailors up 7-0.
In addition to strong play offensively, Haan contributed with a key interception on defense. His interception set up the second touchdown drive, as Brennen Beukema carried the ball seven yards to put the Sailors up fourteen. They would score a couple minutes later as South Christian blocked a punt that they recovered at the HC 15 yard line. Beukema once again found the end zone, this time from two yards out, and the Sailors had a comfortable 21-0 lead.
Holland Christian attempted to make a run near the end of the first half, as quarterback Wilson Wirebaugh threw a three yard touchdown pass to Levi VanDam on fourth down and goal to cut the lead to 21-6 with 1:09 left in the half. They then forced a fumble, and would reach the South Christian 20-yard line before running out of time.
Within the first 2:26 of the second half, South Christian crushed any bit of momentum that the Maroons had obtained. They forced an interception (Josh Oetman made the play) and that set up a twelve yard touchdown run by Toby Hulst. They would then force another interception, as Derek Meyering would make an impressive one-handed catch at the Holland Christian 2-yard line. On the first play, Beukema scored his third touchdown of the night, punching it in to expand the lead to 33-6.
The teams would exchange touchdowns in the final eighteen minutes of this contest, but there was a lot of action by the reserve players in this one. South Christian finished the winners by a score of 40-12 to improve to 1-0 on the year. Next week, the Sailors will hit the road as they travel to Benton Harbor on Friday, who will enter the contest 0-1 after a 42-12 loss to Dearborn Divine Child. For Holland Christian, they will take on Forest Hills Eastern next Thursday, who will come into the game with a 1-0 record after defeating Petoskey.
