Last season, Grand Rapids Catholic Central won the MHSAA Division 4 State Championship. In the title game, they defeated Detroit Country Day 10-7, a game in which they failed to score an offensive touchdown. This year, these two teams opened up the season in Grand Rapids. Senior Jack Bowen, who quarterbacked the title run a year ago, was strong yet again tonight as he was responsible for all three touchdowns in a 20-7 victory.

The Cougars would open the scoring column in this game as Bowen found Nate Trudeau for a 23-yard strike to give Catholic Central the 7-0 lead. Later in the first quarter, the Cougars got a huge defensive play by Gavin Mead. After he intercepted the football, he took the ball back to the 1-yard line. On the next play, Bowen kept the football and crossed the goal line to expand the lead to 13-0, a lead that they would hold as they entered the locker room.

Neither team would score in the third quarter, but the Cougars wasted no time in scoring in the final quarter. Bowen threw a five-yard pass to Aidan Burns for a touchdown, expanding the lead to 20-0. The Yellowjackets would prevent the shutout with just under ninety seconds to play, as they hit the big play on a 70-yard strike to Sajjan Desai.

With the win, Grand Rapids Catholic Central now sits at 1-0 on the season, and they will take on another east-side team next weekend. Detroit Loyola, the 2016 runner-up in Division 7, will enter the contest 0-1 after losing to Detroit Central in their season opener. These two teams will play at Catholic Central next Friday.
