Coach Casey Longo and the East Grand Rapids Pioneers opened their season at home tonight against a daunting opponent in Farmington Hills Harrison. The Hawks and the Pioneers are two of the best programs in the history of MHSAA football, combining for 23 State Championships in football.
East Grand Rapids’ senior quarterback Mike Malewitz showed why he is one of the top quarterbacks in West Michigan on Thursday night as he was responsible for three touchdowns in their 33-8 victory.
Senior Conor Davis started the scoring for East Grand Rapids as he punched it in from eight yards out to give the Pioneers a 7-0 lead. In the second half, Davis scored again as he plunged in from a yard out to give East a 14-6 lead halfway through the third quarter.
Malewitz then took over as he scored a trio of touchdowns, a seventeen yard scamper, a thirty-five yard scamper, and a three-yard pass to Jalen Brousard, to blow the game wide open. Harrison would get two more points as a punt went over the head of East Grand Rapids’ punter, but that would be all, as they fell 33-8.
With the win, East Grand Rapids will start the season 1-0. Next week, they are back in action on Thursday as they host the Huskies of Forest Hills Northern, who fell in their season opener against Byron Center.
