The 2o17 campaign opened for the two-time reigning Tri-Valley Central conference champion Freeland Falcons on Thursday night, as they hosted the Bobcats of Bay City John Glenn. For the second straight season, Freeland started the year with a win, taking home a 38-19 victory.

On the game’s first drive, John Glenn punched the ball in to take a 6-0 lead. The Falcons immediately responded on their first drive as Garrett Mehtiva started 2017 where he left off a season ago, finding the end zone to tie the game at six.

A pair of turnovers committed by the Falcons led to two touchdowns for John Glenn, and they led 19-6. Mehtiva once again found the end zone in the second quarter, as he carried the ball seven yards across the goal line for six points. They then converted the two-point try as Jacob Foco found Jayce Burcier in the end zone.

Perhaps the turning point of the game came right at the end of the second quarter. John Glenn had driven the entire length of the field, reaching the Freeland one-yard line with eight seconds to play. Layne Morgueli, a defensive end for the Falcons brought down John Glenn’s quarterback and with no timeouts left, the half expired.

This sparked an incredible run for the Falcons in the second half as they scored twenty-four unanswered points. They started the third quarter with a safety, as they tackled the quarterback in the end zone. Not long after, Jacob Foco would run in from two yards out. Mehtiva’s two-point conversion gave Freeland the 24-19 edge, their first lead of the day.

In the fourth quarter, Mehtiva found the end zone for the third time in the game, as he scored from one yard out. Foco added the two-point run, and the Falcons increased their lead to thirteen points. The final score of the game for Freeland came on the legs of Tyler Shea, who scored from two yards out.

With the win, Freeland opens the season 1-0 for the seventh straight season. Next week, they are back in action on the road as TVC-Central play begins against Chesaning. The Indians also will enter Thursday’s contest unbeaten, as they come off of a win against Saint Charles. Lou Gamelin will be on the call on Thursday LIVE on Michigan Sports Radio.
