Grand Rapids Catholic Central, one of the top teams in West Michigan, rolled through the regular season, with one exception, and that included a win over Allendale back in week three. Tonight in the Division 4 District Championship game, the rematch was far less competitive as the Cougars rolled over Allendale 38-7.

After Allendale responded halfway through the first quarter to tie the game at seven, momentum in this contest was in a gridlock. The ensuing kickoff gave the Cougars all of the momentum in the world, as Michael Brown returned the kick 95 yards to the house for a touchdown. This sparked a run of 31 consecutive points scored by Catholic Central, all but enforcing the blowout victory.

Junior tailback Nate Fugate scored a pair of touchdowns, including a twenty-six yard run in the second quarter. In addition to the kickoff return, Michael Brown added a touchdown on the ground as he ran thirty yards toward the end zone. The running game for Catholic Central was crucial to their victory tonight, similar to many games throughout the season.

By defeating Allendale, Catholic Central won their first district championship since 2010, the year they last won the state championship. This victory advances the Cougars to next week’s regional football contest where they will take on the winner of tomorrow’s Alma and Escanaba game.
