Friday night in Freeland, first place was on the line in the Tri-Valley Central as the Freeland Falcons took on the Panthers of Alma. The Falcons, ranked tenth in our Remax-United Power Poll and ninth in Division 5, hosted Alma, who was ranked #4 in Division 4. In a low-scoring game, each possession was key, and a big stop by the Freeland defense led the charge in a 12-6 win.
Freeland struck first as Gahret Metina found the end zone on a six yard run. After a failed extra point, the Falcons led 6-0.
Alma would respond late in the first quarter as quarterback Drew Humm took to the air in the red zone, finding Ryan Cornejo in the back of the end zone from six yards out to even the score at six.
In the second quarter, Metina and the ground game came up large again as he rumbled twenty yards into the end zone, his second score of the game, putting the Falcons up 12-6. Once again, Freeland failed on the conversion, keeping the margin at six points.
The defenses buckled down in the second half even more, as they did not allow a single point. On the last drive of the game, the Panthers were driving down the field in an attempt to tie or win the ball game. As Humm dropped back and let it fly, junior Tanner Hare intercepted the pass to seal the deal for the Falcons.
Freeland improves to 4-0 on the season, and 3-0 in the Tri-Valley Central, placing them alone atop the league standings. Alma falls one game back in the league with a 2-1 league record. Next week, the Falcons will take on Standish-Sterling, while the Panthers will take on Midland Bullock Creek.
