Caledonia football missed the playoffs a season ago with a 5-4 record. This paired with the Scots moving to the OK Red put a big chip on the senior class to play at a heightened level of success in order to reach the postseason in 2016. In Saturday’s season opener against Fenton at Grand Valley State in the nightcap of the GRidiron Classic, four seniors did that as they would do all of the scoring for Caledonia in a 55-52 shootout victory.

Caledonia only led this contest for six minutes and thirty seconds, but they were the game’s final six and a half minutes. They played from behind a majority of the evening, including an early 14-0 deficit just two plays into the second quarter. Senior quarterback Michael Silveri scored on a five yard keeper at the 8:27 mark to bring Cal within eight.

Fenton responded with a very quick touchdown, quarterback Josh Czarnota’s third of the half, to take a 21-6 lead with 6:18 left in the first half. Silveri and the Scots’ offense would respond as he found senior tight end Cameron Robinson in the corner of the end zone for a score. After a defensive stop, Caledonia scored again to tie the game as senior tailback Justin Zoet ran 23 yards for a touchdown.

Caledonia immediately recovered an onside kick and marched down inside the ten yard line before fumbling the ball away with just eighteen seconds until halftime. On the first play of the second half, Caledonia fumbled again and Fenton recovered on the Caledonia 29 yard line. The next play on a continual momentum shift, quarterback Josh Czarnota took off for 29 yards and a touchdown to go up 27-21.

Justin Zoet found the end zone for the second time as he ran 39 yards for the tying score, however the momentum would continue to be on Fenton’s side in the third quarter as they scored two more touchdowns to take a 39-27 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Michael Silveri found a streaking Bryce Houser for a 54-yard bullet on the first play of the final quarter to bring the Scots within five points with 11:44 to play.

Once again, Fenton had a short drive as they scored in seventy seconds capped off by a 13 yard run by Czarnota.

Caledonia rattled off 21 consecutive points to take a 55-45 lead with 3:36 to play. Cameron Robinson caught two touchdowns from Silveri in this seven minute span, the longest a fifty-six yard connection. Zoet also found the end zone for the third time with his 55-yard touchdown run sandwiched in between the air strikes.

A tremendously executed hook-and-ladder for 38 yards gave Czarnota his eighth total touchdown of the game and brought Fenton within three points with 2:49 left to play. The onside kick was recovered by Caledonia and the Scots would take care of the football on the ground and ran out the clock.

The Scots offense topped fifty points for the first time since 2013 (52 at Grandville). The fifty five points is the most points scored in a single game since 2007 (55 vs East Kentwood). Senior Michael Silveri led the offense with five touchdowns, Justin Zoet and Cameron Robinson each scored three times, and Bryce Houser added a pair of scores in an impressive display of offense by Caledonia. The defense will need to improve however next week when the Scots take on the Grand Rapids Christian Eagles.
