Freeland football, looking for their third straight trip to the regional finals, started their 2016 campaign against Bay City John Glenn on Thursday night. The Falcons rode to victory on the legs of Gahret Metina, who scored all three touchdowns in the 22-6 win.

Bay City John Glenn opened the game with a pooch kick, which the Falcons returned all the way to the John Glenn 37 yard line. Metina capped off that drive with a seven yard run to open the scoring column with a 7-0 lead. On the next possession, the Bobcats responded with a 20 yard touchdown strike, but they missed the extra point.

A nine minute, eighty-yard possession ensued from Freeland as Metina’s one yard run gave them a 15-6 lead at the break. Freeland converted the two-point try on this play as they bobbled the hold on the extra point try, but the holder Max Kubiak ran around the right side of the line for the conversion.

With under eight minutes left in the fourth quarter, after stopping John Glenn on downs, Freeland took over at the 24 yard line and wasted no time in scoring as Metina followed the tackle 24 yards for the score. The Falcons would win by this 22-6 margin.

Freeland improves to 1-0 on the young season, winning their sixth straight season opener. The Falcons will return to action next week when they take on the Chesaning Indians.
