The Rocket Has Landed: New Haven Wins Their First State Championship

In the final game of the entire MHSAA Boys Basketball Season on Saturday night at the Breslin Center, New Haven and Ludington faced off to determine the best team in Class B. This game was a defensive battle, but in the end, New Haven emerged victorious 45-36 to earn their first ever Boys Basketball State Championship. This game was a slow grind in the beginning, and the sloppiness of the contest played into the hands of Ludington. Flint Beecher’s Dominance Continues In Class C, Win Third Straight Title

To start Saturday’s night session of the 2017 MHSAA Boys Basketball State Championships, two basketball programs with championship pedigrees faced off in the Class C Championship. Although it has been twenty-three years since their last appearance in the state finals, Covenant Christian has three state championships in their program’s history. The Chargers faced off with Flint Beecher, the seven-time champ, who has won two in a row and four out of five titles in Class C. Foster Loyer Wins Battle of Future Spartans in MHSAA Class A Championship

Saturday’s second contest came with even higher expectations than the first. The Grand Rapids Christian Eagles, winners of all 27 of their previous contests, took on the 26-1 Clarkston Wolves in the Class A Boys Basketball Championship. In Coach Dan Fife’s thirty-five years at the helm, it was his school’s first appearance on Championship Saturday. Jets Flying High: Powers North Central Completes Three-Peat in Win over Buckley

Every championship game has a story line. On Saturday in the Class D Boys Basketball State Championship, experience was the difference. Buckley, a team that starts five juniors, was making their first ever trip to semifinals for the final weekend of the season. On the other side, Powers North Central starts five seniors who have lost just one game in their four years at the varsity level.
