On September 15, 2017 two impressive streaks were snapped. The Cleveland Indians fell 4-3 to the Kansas City Royals, snapping an American League record 22 consecutive wins. Just a few hours earlier in Saginaw, the Freeland Falcons had their 24-game regular season winning streak snapped against the Vikings of Swan Valley.
The Falcons struck first in this contest as star running back Garret Metiva punched the ball in from a yard out. This was the lone score of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Swan Valley responded as Emmet Boehler ran it in from four yards out. The score would remain tied at halftime.
Freeland struck first yet again in the second half as Jacob Foco found Metiva for a 29-yard touchdown pass. This lead would last until the first play of the fourth quarter when quarterback Alex Fries found Chase Mendoza for a touchdown.
The turning point of this contest came late in the fourth quarter. The Falcons had the ball at their own 32-yard line, but coughed it up. Swan Valley took over and immediately struck. On the next play, the Vikings capitalized as Fries and Mendoza hooked up again for a touchdown, this time from 32 yards, to give the Vikings the 21-14 lead.
Swan Valley would hold this lead, snapping the 24-game regular season winning streak for Freeland, which dated back to a 2014 loss against Swan Valley. Both teams now sit at 3-1 on the year, though the Vikings hold a better conference record (3-0). Next week, the Vikings will take on Chesaning, while Freeland will face off against Midland Bullock Creek.
