The Coopersville Broncos, fresh off of their Week 1 win against Fruitport, hosted the Hamilton Hawkeyes in the first home game of Coach Ed Kaman’s tenure. These two rivals played a back and forth game all night in which Coopersville ultimately won 35-31 on the legs of Cayden Schneider, who scored three huge touchdowns in the second half.

Coopersville opened the scoring early in the first quarter as quarterback Riley Johnson found Owen Syrek for a 45-yard touchdown strike, taking a 7-0 lead. Hamilton would respond as Johnathan Dekkinga carried the ball across the goal line for a one-yard touchdown run, evening the score at seven after the first quarter.

Dekkinga had a stellar game on Thursday night, as he scored three touchdowns in their defeat. His second score of the game, which took place early on in the second quarter, gave Hamilton a 14-7 lead. Coopersville would respond as Riley Johnson ran it in from a yard out, but Hamilton would take a three-point lead to the locker room after Riley Coffey connected on a 44-yard field goal at the end of the second quarter.

The third and final touchdown from Johnathan Dekkinga gave the Hawkeyes a 24-14 lead early in the third quarter. On the next drive of the game, the Cayden Schneider show began. Coopersville would cut the lead to three as Schneider used his hands to haul in a ten-yard touchdown pass. After allowing a touchdown, Schneider responded with a 41-yard touchdown to keep the margin at three points, a 31-28 deficit.

With 1:23 to play, Schneider capped off his night by breaking a 73-yard touchdown run, giving Coopersville a 35-31 lead. They would ultimately hold this lead, earning just their second 2-0 start since 2006. Next week, they will start OK Blue play as they travel to Comstock Park, who also will enter the game at 2-0. For Hamilton, they are 0-2 for the first time since 2006. They begin OK Green play next Friday when they travel to Zeeland East.
