The high school football season began for most teams on Thursday night. For Rockford and Saline, they began their play a few hours early, as the two teams kicked off the 2017 campaign with a 4:00 kickoff at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor. These two teams both had successful seasons a year ago, and they were actually scheduled to play, but some health issues resulted in a forfeit by the Rams.

Both schools have boasted strong defenses over the years, and if Thursday was any indication, then this trend should continue this fall. The Rockford defense forced three turnovers on downs, a missed field goal, and an interception. They also limited the Hornets offense to just 211 total yards. Most importantly, they kept the Hornets off the scoreboard in this contest, coming away with a 14-0 shutout win.

The Rams broke the scoring column first in the second quarter of Thursday’s contest when they embarked on a 68-yard drive. After stopping Saline on downs, Rockford marched down the field, and capped off their drive with a 24-yard touchdown run by Ian Rodriguez. Eric Zeboor knocked in the extra point to put the Rams up 7-0, a score that would hold as the two teams headed to the locker room.

After completing just one pass in the first half, Rockford’s quarterback Jason Whittaker doubled that total in the second half, including a 59-yard strike to Eli Haddad for a touchdown. On the day, Whittaker would finish 3/10 for 80 yards and a score, as well as 52 yards on the ground on seven carries.

The Hornets’ got their best drive of the game immediately following the touchdown, but it was stopped at the 20-yard line as Haddad came up big once again, this time recording an interception. This would seal the victory for Rockford, a 14-0 outcome in the season opener to improve to 1-0. Next week, they will be back in action as they take on Lowell at home on September 1. This game will be broadcast LIVE on Michigan Sports Radio.
