Grand Ledge’s Strong Second Half Leads to Win over Hudsonville

The Hudsonville Eagles opened their 2017 campaign on the road Thursday night when they travelled to take on the Comets of Grand Ledge. Last year, the Eagles rode the legs of senior running back Dalton Agers to a 21-14 win. This year, a young Hudsonville team struggled in their season opener, a 41-14 defeat. In the first quarter, Sam Baine opened the scoring column on both sides when he scored from a yard out. This gave Hudsonville an early 7-0 advantage. The only other touchdown before the teams returned to the locker room for halftime was a 65-yard deep pass for the Comets, evening the score at seven. The final three minutes of the third quarter and the first six minutes of the fourth quarter did the Eagles in, as the Comets scored four times. Nate Umholtz found the endzone twice, both from two yards or closer in this stretch, and the other two scores were passes off the arm of Bird, who finished with three touchdown tosses. Hudsonville would score a touchdown with three minutes to play, as Drew Martini ran it in from one yard out, but that would be all their offense produced in the second half. After a 9-6 edge in the first downs in the first half, Hudsonville only recorded one first down in seven possessions in the second half. Next week, the Eagles...

Coopersville Wins Second Straight Against Fruitport

A season ago, the Coopersville Broncos and Fruitport Trojans faced off in the season opener. The Broncos won 36-13, and started the year unbeaten. On Thursday night, these two squared off again, and for the second year in a row Coopersville will start 1-0, as they emerged victorious 35-12. Things started fast for the Coopersville offense as Cayden Schneider burst through the defense for a 62-yard touchdown run. Schneider would finish the night with a pair of touchdowns, as his second score in the fourth quarter capped off the scoring. Quarterback Riley Johnson, a strong player a year ago, also added a pair of touchdowns through the air in this game, as he struck for 57 and 47 yard touchdowns. This game was never quite close, as Coopersville was in control from the start. This was a strong first game for head coach Ed Kaman, who improves to 1-0 as the head coach of Coopersville. The Broncos start 1-0 for the second straight season, and this year they hope to change the result of the final eight games, as last year they lost eight in a row.
