The boys basketball playoffs have advanced to the regional stage, and as a result, the matchups start to get better. On Monday at Grand Haven, the Class A Region 2 Regional is going to take place and the second game will be an incredible battle of undefeated teams. The 23-0 Muskegon Big Reds will face the 23-0 Grand Rapids Christian Eagles in the Regional semifinals. While the tickets are extremely limited, the access to the game has now grown. Muskegon reached the Regionals with their 23-0 record after sweeping the OK Black slate and defeating impressive opponents such as Grand Haven, Whitney Young (IL), East Kentwood, Ypsilanti Community and Detroit Loyola in the non-conference portion of their slate. In the playoffs, the Big Reds defeated Reeths-Puffer (76-29), Kenowa Hills (72-24) and Grand Haven (70-43) to earn the district championship. On the year, the Big Reds average 69.9 points per game.
Grand Rapids Christian also enters the Regionals at 23-0 with an OK Gold championship under their belt. After playing one of the toughest non-conference slates around to defeat teams such as Detroit Country Day, Kalamazoo Central, Godwin Heights, Lawrence North (IN), West Ottawa and Grand Rapids Catholic Central to go along with a pair of league wins over Wayland Union, the Eagles are battle tested. Christian had an easy roll through the playoffs as well as they defeated East Grand Rapids (58-43), Middleville (68-32) and East Kentwood (73-54). They also can score in bunches, racking up an average of 67.3 points per game.
The other half of this regional features 22-1 West Ottawa, who’s lone loss is to Grand Rapids Christian, and 16-7 Forest Hills Northern, who topped Northview to reach the Regional finals. This contest will start at 5:30, and the Muskegon and Grand Rapids Christian showdown will follow at 7:30.
