West Catholic Tops Lansing Catholic in First Round Action

West Catholic is the three-time defending Division 5 State Champion, and they have appeared in four consecutive State Championship games. In all three of their championship runs, the Falcons had to go through the Cougars of Lansing Catholic. Tonight, they cleared this hurdle early as they took care of Lansing Catholic in the first round 28-7. Kicker Liam Putz, who has been a strong kicker throughout the season for West Catholic, connected on a pair of field goals from 34 and 47 yards in the first half. The quarterback tandem of David Fox and Gaetano Vallone each accounted for a score, as Fox ran for a touchdown in the first half, and Vallone passed for one in the second half. West Catholic’s defense also chipped in as two-way player Sam Neville intercepted a pass and returned it to the house for a score. With the win, West Catholic advances to the MHSAA Division 5 Region 3 District 1 Finals where they will take on Portland, who has been ranked as high as the number one team in Division 5 this season. Lowell Blows Out Greenville in OK White Rematch

Lowell, the undefeated OK White Champions, re-matched with their week five opponent Greenville in the first round of the MHSAA Playoffs. Their result in Week 5 was a 35-10 blowout, and tonight in the Pre-District Round, the result was very similar. The Lowell Red Arrows played the game very close, yet they emerged victorious 42-17. David Kruse, the quarterback of the Lowell Red Arrows, has been a sturdy offensive player throughout the entire season, and he played great again tonight. He rushed for a trio of first half touchdowns to lead the offensive campaign, with a long of twenty one yards. Senior tailback Nate Stephens stepped up to carry the load for the Red Arrows in the second half, as he ran for three touchdowns on runs of five, twenty-two and fifty-three yards. He and Kruse were aided by the strong offensive line of the Red Arrows. With the win, Lowell advances to the MHSAA Division 2 Region 1 District 1 Finals, where they will take on Traverse City Central, who squeaked out a narrow 13-12 win over inner-city rival Traverse City West on Friday night. Freeland Dominates Run Game in Victory over Swan Valley

Earlier in the season, the Vikings gave Freeland one of their toughest tests of the season, as they led multiple times before ultimately falling 29-14.
