On Friday night, the OK Blue lead was on the line as 6-1 West Catholic traveled to 7-0 Catholic Central. A packed house of over 10,000 was in attendance, many of them more than ninety minutes before kick, to witness the first matchup of former City League foes since 2009. A strong second half in which West Catholic shut the Cougars out was the difference, as they emerged victorious 20-3.
The elite defenses played up to their reputations in the first half as neither team scored in the opening twelve minutes. The second quarter consisted of just an exchange of field goals and a 31 yard Josh Steffes field goal just before the half tied the contest at three.
In the second half, West Catholic came out and hit Catholic Central in the mouth, scoring all seventeen points. Quarterback Gaetano Vallone was back in action tonight, and he made a huge impact accounting for both of the Falcon touchdowns. He used his arm to connect with Sam Neville on a 90 yard strike, then later in the half, he used his legs for a ten yard touchdown scamper.
West Catholic, despite their early season loss to Zeeland West, is now 7-1 on the year and they have clinched at least a share of the OK Blue title. With a win next week over Allendale, they could win the league outright. Their defense has been elite in league play allowing just four points per game. For Catholic Central, they will end their season facing the Broncos of Coopersville.
