In the early and mid 2000’s, East Grand Rapids consistently won the OK White Conference. Since the turn of the decade however, the Pioneers have only won one league title (2010). After Friday night’s shutout win over Wayland, the Pioneers are 4-0 in the OK Gold, and they essentially hold a game and a half lead on Grand Rapids Christian, as they maintain the head-to-head advantage.

Just 79 seconds into the game, quarterback Mike Malewitz found Jack Combs for a 44 yard touchdown to put the Pioneers on the board and in front 7-0. Just three minutes later, tailback Hub Hejna rumbled into the end zone on a six yard carry to put East up 14.

Hejna would score on an eight yard score at the five minute mark of the first quarter to put the Pioneers up 21-0. Malewitz would throw for two more touchdowns in the quarter’s final two minutes as he found Jack Combs and Luke Elder in the end zone to put East in front 35-0 after just the first twelve minutes of the contest.

The defense got in on the scoring fun as senior defensive end Nick Sullivan intercepted a Wayland pass and returned it thirty-five yards to the end zone to increase the margin to 42 points. Neither team would score the remainder of the contest, as there was a running clock during the entirety of the second half.

For East Grand Rapids, they now are one win away from clinching the playoffs as they are 5-2 on the season, and they are in the driver’s seat in the OK White. With the loss, Wayland drops to 3-4, and the Wildcats will need to win out and get some help to reach the postseason. Next week, East will take on Forest Hills Eastern, while Wayland will face Grand Rapids Christian.
