Tonight in a rain-soaked affair in Rockford, the two best teams in the OK Red clashed in a physical, low-scoring affair. The Grandville Bulldogs, 5-0 on the season and fresh off a 980 yard offensive attack, traveled to Rockford who are winners of three straight games in a battle of first place teams in the OK Red. After a critical stop on a two-point conversion, the Rams emerged victorious 7-6.
Both defenses are amongst the area’s best as the teams had given up an average of 13 points per game or less this season. This stayed true again tonight as each team pitched shutouts in the first half. In the third quarter, the Rams finally caught a big break as senior tailback Nick Isley ran 56 yards to put the Rams in the red zone. A few plays later, Isley carried the ball over the line for a five yard touchdown to put Rockford up 7-0.
With 11:30 left in the fourth quarter, Grandville found the end zone on a five yard run by Josh Atwell, and the Bulldogs opted to go for the two point conversion and the lead. The run was stuffed short of the end zone by Paul Renke, and the Rams held a 7-6 edge.
Neither team scored in the last eleven minutes, and as a result the Rams take over first place in the OK Red. Rockford now sits at 4-2 on the season, and 3-0 in the OK Red. Next week, they will take on West Ottawa. For Grandville, they drop to 5-1 and will leave league play next week to take on Ottawa Hills.
