Rockford football entered their Week 3 contest in a position that it has not found itself since 1978. Two years after America’s bicentennial, the Rams were 0-2 entering their third game. In the thirty-seven seasons following, Rockford has managed to win at least one of their first two games. This year, the Rams had to forfeit their first game, then ran into state finalist Lowell in Week 2. These circumstances made Friday’s contest against Mona Shores a must win, which the Rams did 37-23.

Rockford jumped out to a quick lead as Conrad Hayes took a Sailor punt fifty yards for a touchdown. Quarterback Jason Whittaker tossed a twenty-two yard pass later in the first quarter to Alex Blick, giving Rockford a 14-0 edge.

The Sailors outscored Rockford in the second quarter, as the teams exchanged touchdowns, but an Austin Flowers field goal trimmed the margin. Headed into the locker room, Rockford led 21-10.

In the third quarter, things tightened up as Dee Davis’ one yard touchdown run was the lone scoring play for either team. Mona Shores entered the game’s final corner with momentum and only a five point deficit to overcome.

The Rams’ Nick Isley found the end zone for the second time just seconds into the fourth quarter on a 24 yard run. After the two point conversion, Rockford led 29-16.

Mona Shores would respond with a quick touchdown by Tyler Robbins, a fourteen yard scamper, to bring the Sailors within six with 9:55 left to play.

Rockford quarterback Jason Whittaker led the Rams on a drive to answer in an attempt to put the game away with another touchdown. With just over five and a half minutes left, Whittaker found the end zone using his legs to give Rockford the 37-23 lead. The Rams would win the game by this score.

For Rockford, they improve to 1-2 with a much needed win before conference play begins next week at Caledonia. Mona Shores falls for the second straight week to a strong opponent, and they now sit a 1-2 on the year with their conference opening contest against Reeths Puffer looming next Friday.
